This is a fantastic opportunity to secure an authentic concert grand piano of the pre WW11 era, made by one of the finest German piano builders in an era when piano manufacturers were creating some of the best pianos ever manufactured.

Schwechten is regarded as a quality German piano and the company’s manufacturing plant was in Frankfurter at the time.(The plate indicates Berlin)

The piano’s quality features include agraffes inserted into the underside of the cappo bar in the high treble registers to facilitate tuning and prevent any grooves forming in the bar over time that adversely affects the tonal quality. Many pianos just have the strings bearing directly to the underside of the cappo bar.

According to the serial number (45020) – Pierce (1997) – indicates that the piano was made c.1928. In fact according to Pierce, Schwechten made only 800pianos between 1928 and 1934 displaying serial numbers 45000 to 45800 respectively.

The piano is 8″ 7″ long measured from the tail edge of the lid to the front of the key-slip. As such, the piano is a true concert grand. It is often the case that piano manufacturers used the finest materials for their concert grand pianos particularly during the period in which this piano was manufactured.

This piano has been seriously revamped: the keyboard has been recovered; the soundboard has been re-varnished; the plate has been re-sprayed; the piano has been re-pinned and re-strung whilst the case has been re-sprayed in a low sheen black finish. The action has been upgraded – new hammers have been installed along with new rollers and the extensive regulation has been performed. The overall result is quite stunning The tonal quality of the piano is a deep mellow bass and bell-like treble. The action is very playable and all notes work extremely well. The pin block and sound board are intact and in excellent condition.

It has bold architecture – particularly the legs. Schwechten Grand Pianos are few and far between.

I (the restorer) purchased this piano from someone who claimed that his seller had obtained it from the Lithgow Theatre.

The restoration was a long drawn out process executed with much deliberation and patience. The piano is presently located in St Mark’s Anglican Church Fitzroy and may be viewed by arrangement.
